MyCiTi commuters and road users should please take note of the MyCiTi route deviations and road closures to accommodate the annual Cape Town Cycle Tour that is taking place on Sunday 6 March 2016.

‘The City of Cape Town is proud to be hosting the world’s largest timed cycle race for the 39th year. On Sunday cyclists will face a challenging route of approximately 109 km around the Cape Peninsula and they will be supported by our residents along the way. As is the case with cities around the world, Cape Town is also becoming more populated and congested due to urbanisation. With the Cycle Tour taking place on our doorstep, I would like to make use of the opportunity to emphasise that cycling should be embraced not only for recreational purposes, but also as a legitimate form of transport,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member: Transport for Cape Town, Councillor Brett Herron. For the past decade, the City has implemented a wide range of initiatives related to infrastructure, signage, and improved visibility and planning to improve the safety of cyclists.

‘Transport for Cape Town, the City’s transport authority, has implemented cycle lanes across the city and the city’s existing cycle network now covers approximately 450 km. This network is expanded each year as it forms part of the City’s non-motorised transport network (NMT) strategy to promote walking and cycling across Cape Town and to reduce residents’ reliance on motorised transport in commuting to and from work,’ said Councillor Herron.

In an effort to support the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the City has put in place special arrangements for the day of the event, including a free shuttle service. Spectators are encouraged to please make use of this service due to limited parking in Green Point.

The City would also like to inform residents and visitors of the following arrangements on the day:

MyCiTi service: Sunday 6 March 2016

  • A shuttle service will run every 10 minutes from 06:00 to 18:00 between the Thibault Square station in the Cape Town central business district (CBD) and the Stadium station in Green Point. Spectators are encouraged to please use this service due to limited parking in Green Point. The shuttle will also stop at the Civic Centre station from 14:00 onwards
  • The Civic Centre station will be closed from 04:20 until 14:00. This is due to Hertzog Boulevard being closed to normal traffic to allow for participants of the Cycle Tour to access the start
  • All MyCiTi services operating from the Civic Centre station will be relocated to the Thibault Square and Adderley Street stations during this period. As from 14:00 the usual service will operate again from the Civic Centre station
  • Route 108 (Hangberg, Sea Point, Adderley station) will be suspended from 07:00 until 19:30
  • Route 109 (Hout Bay, Imizamo Yethu, Sea Point, Adderley station) will be suspended from 07:00 until 19:30
