5FM’s live music sessions 5Live comes to Joburg for the first time since its inception last year. The feature is hosted by Rob Forbes and Fix Moeti on the last Friday of every month and usually held in Cape Town. This month the station has invited indie rock band Desmond and the Tutus on Friday, 22 April, a week earlier to accommodate the station’s takeover weekend in Polokwane for Small Town Live Loud.
The special edition of 5Live will be broadcast from the V1 Studios at the SABC in partnership with The Academy of Sound Engineering (ASE) and The Academy of Television & Screen Arts (ATV) between 15:00 and 16:00. The ASE & ATV will provide technical assistance in a studio they use as part of training for their students.Pretoria based band Desmond and the Tutus formed in 2005 with their debut album Tuckshop released three years later. The band members Shane Durrant, Nick Dinnie, Craig Durrant and Doug Bower offer up a unique sound they best describe as kwela-indie-punk. They have toured extensively internationally, which included opening on their 2009 UK tour for The Vivian Girls, The Soft Pack and Women.
In 2012 the band worked with Los Angeles based producer, Eric Broucek, and their second full length album, MNUSIC was released later that year. The first three singles from the album all charted on 5FM’s Top 40 with the second single Zim Zala Bim reaching No. 1 on the 5FM Top 40.
