Invisible

“Just people – but are often not recognized for who they are but as the scum of the earth.” The homeless. Street People. We pretend not to see them, look directly past them – never at them. Sometimes we pretend they don’t exist and the smell is just horrible “dammit, they could at least have a wash!”. Then we meet Kathleen Marion Jacobs. Suddenly things didn’t make sense to her, nothing was too clear, then she started running. Far away from normal, her everyday life, it suddenly seemed strange to her. Away from all that was familiar to her. Family, friends, the school where she was a history teacher and the children who laughed at her. Katie is a famous “Bergie” on Greenmarket Square, full of story tales.

Everyone knows her and she knows everyone, a smile and a chuckle will cost you nothing, but if it’s a life lesson, it costs R5.00! Katie’s story is not unique. It happens all the time, but what makes her story being on the street so special? Was it the forced removal of District Six in 1966 as a child? Or was it the fact that the Cape Flats was a noose around her neck, not able to breathe? Or was it her love of history? Or perhaps because her own history happened – that she had not foreseen? But she’s here now, with history and all. “You know me, but you do not see my soul!”
