COMEDY CENTRAL UNLEASHES NEW COMEDY TALENT IN CONTINENT-WIDE STAND-UP SEARCH
Johannesburg, 15 June 2016: Calling all amateur comedians: grab a mic, polish up your best stand-up routines and commit your funniest gags to video – and you could have a chance to join the ranks of African comedy royalty as the winner of “Grab the Mic” 2016 – Comedy Central’s stand-up comedy search.
Starting tonight, Comedy Central (DStv channel 122) is continuing to stand up for amateur stand-up talent in the latest outing of “Grab the Mic” – a search for upcoming comedy stars that paves the way to a bright new future as a professional comedian – now extended to entrants in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa for the first time!
To participate in the contest, and for your chance to make life funnier, upload a short video clip (30 second to 3 minutes) of yourself performing stand-up or sketch comedy in any commonly spoken African language of your choice to www.comedycentralafrica.com.
Alternatively, up and coming comics can also apply to audition in front of a live audience at Parker’s Comedy & Jive every Wednesday night from 15 June at 20:00 CAT by sending an email to legendary comedian and entrepreneur Joe Parker at email@example.com.
Commented Evert van der Veer, Vice President, Comedy Central, Africa, “African comedy is up there with the best in the world but it’s important to build a pipeline of new talent for the future. Our previous searches unleashed the rare talents of Glen Biderman-Pam (2013) and Mbeu “Snooze” Kambuwa (2015) on the unsuspecting public, so we are looking forward to seeing what treats our 2016 competition will stir up, especially with the addition of a pan-African component.”
Heat winners from the live auditions will go up against the online finalist, the Cape Town finalist Francois van As and Napsta Masinga – the “Grab the Mic” heat winner from the Comedy Central International Comedy Festival (CCICF) on 24 November.
