David Tlale, the internationally renowned fashion designer’s apprentice initiative, The Intern by David Tlale, is running for the 3rd year with aspirant intern fashion designers given an opportunity to showcase their collection at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week on 10 August 2016 in Joburg.

The initiative takes in nine interns who compete against each other under a specific theme with the top 6 selected to showcase some of their creations at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

The Top 6 interns who showcased at Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton include, Cindy Mfabe, Mmuso Potsane, Siphosihle Masango, Angeline Mafemo, Ntando Ngwenya and Maxwell Boko.

“The initiative was designed to mentor South Africa’s young fashion designers, by giving them a platform to embrace their own experiential values, showcase their creativity and instil quality, finishing, fit and excellence within the young designers,” says David Tlale.The program was launched in 2013 with the aim being to provide young designers with an opportunity to experience the challenging design world with a curriculum designed to focus on advanced design process, advanced pattern engineering, Hi-tech garment construction and finish, fabric, cohesive collection development and trends, advanced line-sheet and a look book compilation techniques, sales, customer care and branding.

Since its inception, The Intern by David Tlale has grown from taking two interns a year with the winner taking a coveted spot at the David Tlale Studio as a Fashion Assistant for three months to now accepting nine interns per year and the winner taking a coveted spot at the Studio as a Fashion Assistant for a year.

“The initiative is developed to focus on skills transfer and (finishing school) for post-graduates fashion design students, who are looking to improve their skills, finished products and to be ready for the market place on a local and international stage,” continues Tlale.

“Our current interns are all from Gauteng. We plan to roll out the program nationally as of 2017. We also plan to extend into a reality TV show, to highlight that South Africa has talent that is worth seeing and allow these young designers to become famous because of their beautiful creations,” concludes Tlale.

Celebrity guests at the showcase included model Blue Mbombo, Rapper Emtee, Bahumi and others.
