The Cheetahs are one of three teams who could lose their Super Rugby status if the competition is reduced from 18 to 15 teams next year.
A motion to cut three teams from the tournament was put forward at a Sanzaar meeting in London on Friday, and according to reports the New Zealand Rugby Union has given its backing to the Jaguares and Sunwolves and proposed that two South African teams and an Australian side bet axed instead.
