The Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape commend the South African Police Service (SAPS) for the speedy arrest of a 49-year-old man, who is alleged to have raped a 5-year-old girl from Mitchell’s Plain.
We strongly condemn these brutal acts of violence inflicted upon our women and children.
Between the 2014/15 and 2016/17 financial years, 640 child rape cases were withdrawn before they went to court, 751 cases were withdrawn in court, while 135 alleged perpetrators were found not guilty.
This, along with all other violent attacks on our children is completely unacceptable. Our responsibility as a society is to ensure that our children are protected at all times. As residents we must always be vigilant, making sure that we remain informed of our children’s whereabouts and the people with whom they spend their time.We must also be mindful of the adults and older people we expose our children to, knowing that some have questionable morals.
We call on the community to let justice run its course, and to assist the SAPS with the investigation in order for this matter to be swiftly resolved and for the guilty parties to be held accountable.
We further call on the Minister of Social Development, Albert Fritz, to ensure that the family continues to receive trauma counselling and additional support, already being provided by social workers.
As the DA in the Western Cape, we will continue to support any initiative that will ensure the safekeeping of our children across all communities.
