Three construction companies owned by women have so far, for the current 2017/18 financial year, been awarded contracts by the Western Cape Department of Human Settlements.
The Minister of Human Settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela responded during a recent sitting of the House in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament to my question about the number of female-owned construction companies that have been contracted by his Department.
I welcome this news from the Minister, because it once again demonstrates the DA’s commitment to empowering female-owned enterprises, especially as we exit woman’s month. I’m also pleased that the Department has opened its framework agreement, to give more female-owned construction companies an opportunity to register on its database, in order for them to also be considered when tenders are advertised.
During the 2016/17 financial year 14 female-owned construction companies were contracted by the Department. One of these female-owned companies, Vicmol Construction, proved, by winning the 2017 Govan Mbeki Best Woman Contractor award, that women also have a vital role to play and can successfully contribute to this sector.
As much as the Department is achieving successes in this regard, I continue to call on the Minister and his Department to ensure that more female-owned construction companies are given an opportunity to be part of this sector. Furthermore to continue empowering our women, because their participation in this industry will lead to expanded economic inclusion.
As the DA in the Western Cape, we remain committed to supporting, empowering and developing all historically disadvantaged individuals, especially our women.
