More about Oliver Munnik:

Oliver Munnik is 26 years old and lives in Cape Town. For him, riding a bike is a means to an amazing lifestyle and a window of opportunity that allows him to see and experience the world over the years the passion for riding and the outdoors has taken him on countless adventures – from Lake Como to St Moritz to Croatia. He is currently living his dream as a professional mountain biker, racing for the GT Mr Price squad based out of Cape Town. On the racing side of things he is focused on the South African XC season, while also competing in ultra-marathons and stage races throughout the country.

We were also lucky enough to chat to Oliver Munnik and we asked Oliver a few questions and this is what he had to say:

What was your last big race you competed in and how did you do?

I cycled my 8th Cape Epic this year with a friend of mine who has improved dramatically to finish 79th. It was great to have helped him achieve his goal of a top 80 finish.

Are you looking forward to Wine 2Whales and what is your desired outcome?

Ja, I always look forward to the W2W. I’ve been involved with every edition and it’s incredible to see how the race has grown from strength-to-strength since 2008.

Have you competed before in Wine 2Whales and what has been your best time?

Ja, I’ve ridden many W2Ws. My best result was in 2008 when I won it with Erik Kleinhans.

What’s your advice for someone entering this race for the first time?

Be sure to practice singletrack riding as the route encompasses many sections of trail. Buy a good pair of cycling shorts too – you won’t regret it!

More about Wines2Whales event…

Wines2Whales

After completing his first Sani2C in 2006, avid mountain biker Johan Kriegler conceptualized the idea of a similar multi-stage race in the Western Cape. In 2008 he approached local sports marketing specialists Stillwater Sport & Entertainment and after numerous lengthy meetings the Wines2Whales Three Day Mountain Bike Stage Race was born under the directorship of Johan Kriegler, Michael Meyer, Hendrico Burger and Dezroy Poole.

The inaugural event took place in November 2009 and attracted 300 riders with the race village set up at the De Rust Futura School in Elgin. By 2010 word of the Wines2Whales Race had gotten out and to the delight of organizers a spectacular field of 1100 riders signed up to be part of the second year’s experience (with 300 riders on the waiting list). The 2010 race village was set up at the Elgin Grabouw Country Club. This spectacular overnight growth spurt resulted in the event organizers splitting the field in 2011 with the introduction of the Wines2Whales Adventure. By hosting two events event organizers could give more mountain bikers the opportunity to be part of the Wines2Whales experience. Both the 2011 Wines2Whales Adventure and Wines2Whales Race attracted a field of 850 riders (per event) with 400 riders on the waiting list. The 2011 Race Village was once again at the Elgin Grabouw Country Club. The 2012 event saw 1100 eager riders (per event) flock to Lourensford Estate (Somerset West) for the start of a mountain biking experience like no other.

In 2013 a third event during the week between the “Adventure,” and the “Race,” called the “Ride,” was introduced, giving riders more of an opportunity and choice on which event to participate. In 2014 all the three events were fully booked with a waiting list on two of the three events and this was once again repeated in 2015 and 2016.

The FNB Wines2Whales MTB Directors and their teams have built the event to a point whereby it is now seen as one of the Premium Stage Races in the World and attracts mountain bikers from all around the world to participate or race.
