STATEMENT BY THE CITY’S EXECUTIVE MAYOR, PATRICIA DE LILLE
Today I had the pleasure of meeting rapper, singer and songwriter, Nyota Parker, who is the winner of the second annual festive lights switch-on music challenge.
Nyota, who is 17 years old and from Milnerton, beat tough competition to be crowned the overall winner over 94 other entries and walked away with a cash prize of R10 000.
She will join an impressive line-up of artists set to take the stage at the City of Cape Town’s free festive lights concert this Sunday, 3 December 2017 on the Grand Parade.
This means she will share a platform with established performers including Vicky Sampson, Freshlyground, Jimmy Nevis, Craig Lucas, The Rockets and Friends as well as Idols winner Paxton, among other acts.
The message in the 17-year-old’s music, which inspires people to see beyond what is in front of them, be who they really are, and to live life meaningfully, led to her getting 46 000 ‘Buzz’ points.
Nyota is the creator of a new music genre she has named ‘TRAZZ©’ – a mixture of Trap and jazz.
On winning she remarked: ‘Thank you to the City for staging this competition and for everyone who voted for me. This is a huge opportunity for me and can open many doors and I want to represent Cape Town in the best way possible. I believe that this is the start of an exciting time for the discovery of new artists who don’t conform to the norm and that Cape Town will lead this trend. I am so happy to be one of those voices and to share it with the audience on Sunday’.The response to this competition has been phenomenal. The entries were varied, spanning all genres, and generated significant support. It really shows how diverse our community is, but also that we can all come together through music. Similar to the annual festive lights celebration, this competition brings unknown talent to the fore and is indicative of our growing efforts to build an inclusive city by celebrating our unique and diverse talents.
The competition also speaks to our commitment to building an opportunity city where we provide young emerging artists the platform to showcase their talent.
Our congratulations to everyone who entered and especially to Nyota. We are looking forward to seeing you perform this weekend.
Each year thousands of Capetonians and visitors enjoy the celebration. The family-focused festival that will #CelebrateSummer from 16:00 on Sunday will welcome the start of the festive season, with the big switch-on moment at 20:30. This will be followed by a colourful 3D video-mapping display that will swathe the City Hall and surrounds with festive brightness.
Each year thousands of Capetonians and visitors enjoy the celebration. This event is indeed a key example of how we are building an inclusive city as we come together to enjoy safe fun and the best in local entertainment.
