The People’s Side Bae, Skhumbuzo “Skhumba” Hlophe, has come up with ways people can use to escape VAT hikes.
Following Wednesday’s budget speech where Finance Minister, Malusi Gigaba, announced that VAT will be increasing from 14% to 15%, South African funny-man, Skhumba, says “Here the honourable minister was trying to break it down to us gently that it’s going to be more expensive to buy products in store.”
“Let’s rather find affordable presents, tools, toys and other equipment with 0% VAT on OLX,” says Skhumba.
Skhumba has been an advocate for economic freedom since the beginning of 2018 when he was announced as the brand ambassador of OLX South Africa.
He also appears on all OLX TV commercials acting the character of the “People’s Side Bae” where he dishes out humourous financial tips on how people can make and save money.
His tips vary from selling a double bed for a single bed because “single beds are for single people” to selling hardly used plates that are reserved for visitors who never visit.Skhumba who had written an open letter to newly elected President Cyril Ramaphosa offering to deliver the budget speech has also weighed in on the fuel levy that’s set to rise by 52c per litre.
“What I gather here is that it’s going to be very painful to roll down the window and ask for ‘full tank 95’. Let’s consider selling that Vrrrpha on OLX and find a smaller-nyana car at a good price that won’t guzzle our funds,” says the People’s Side Bae.
He also commended the government for announcing free education for all and allocating funds for it.
Skhumba says it’s a “smart move, Minister. This, however, does not mean that student life will be pap and vleis. Look to OLX to buy textbooks at lower prices because 2nd hand books can still get you 1stclass marks.”
