This afternoon a permanent delegate from the Western Cape and a Whip in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), Cathy Labuschagne, was manhandled from the chamber on instruction of the session chair.
This is completely unacceptable and I call on the chairperson of the NCOP to immediately launch a full investigation into this matter.
Member Labuschagne correctly rose on point of order, to appeal that order be brought to the house. This call was made, following 15 minutes of mayhem caused by the EFF. The Chair refused to hear the point of order, had the microphone turned off and ordered Labuschagne from the chamber.
When member Labuschagne stood her ground, demanding to be heard, she was forcibly removed by two large people, who were casually dressed and did not identify themselves.
One held the member around the neck. Not only is this alleged assault on a dignified and elderly lady totally reprehensible, but such an eviction is also not catered for in the NCOP rules.
It is an act of cowardice to punish a woman who is standing by her rights while ignoring the disruption caused by a group set on creating chaos. The chairperson has to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book, as the NCOP is facing irreparable harm, if this matter is not investigated.
