The Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape is deeply saddened by the loss of eight lives amid raging fires in the Southern Cape area.
I commend the Western Cape Department of Local Government’s swift intervention which saw more than 400 firefighters from Cape Nature, the City of Cape Town, West Coast, Overberg and Winelands District municipalities respectively, deployed to douse the blaze. Furthermore, two helicopters, two fixed wing bombers and one SANDF helicopter are on standby and rendering aerial support.
I salute the brave men and women who are working tirelessly and under difficult conditions to control the fires and save lives. I furthermore commend volunteers who have invested their time and resources to assist those affected by the blaze.
As the DA in the Western Cape, we urge that all residents take extreme caution in affected areas and implore on residents to cooperate with emergency services in light of the ongoing evacuations taking place. I am pleased that community centres in Knysna and George have been made available for residents to take refuge.
The DA in the Western Cape will continue to assist those affected as much as possible. We stand with the people of the Southern Cape during this difficult time.
