GET READY TO ROCK AT THE 2019 V&A WATERFRONT’S HIGH SCHOOL BAND SLAM

Dates             Thursday, 7 March and Friday, 8 March

                       Wednesday, 13 March and Thursday, 14 March

Final               Friday, 15 March at 6pm

Between Thursday 7 and Friday 15 March, 10 Peninsula High Schools will go head-to-head in the 2019 High School Band Slam at the V&A Waterfront’s Amphitheatre from 6pm.

The audience can expect to hear a wide range of music genres and instruments including drums, pianos, guitars and saxophones.

The shortlist of schools includes Rustenburg Girls’ High, Parklands College, Bergvliet High, Belhar High, Wynberg Girls High, Parel Vallei High, Norman Henshilwood High, Bishops College, Bridgetown High and Elsies River High.

The top three bands will stand a chance of winning a musical consultation and equipment for their school to the value of R20 000 from Mars Music. An additional R5 000 V&A Waterfront gift voucher will be awarded to the school that demonstrates they have the best crowd participation and support.

Each school band will be a scored by a panel of industry experts according to three categories. Musicality includes song arrangements, technical proficiency, artistic ability, originality and interpretation. For presentations the judges will look at performance attitude, stage dominance, confidence and rapport.  For patronage, schools will need to show they have support, crowd participation, school spirit and enthusiasm.

The band “Blue Quaver” was formed in 2017 with only five members and by the end of 2018 a few more members were introduced. The band performed at the 2018 High School Band Slam playing covers from bands and artists. Blue Quaver’s style can range from mellow acoustic and funk to local South African music.

 

Parklands College

The Parklands College Jazz Band formed in 2014 is a 12-piece ensemble that boasts a versatile group of young and talented musicians. Playing a mixture of jazzy, groovy and uplifting pop music. Their sound is lively and fun. The bands’ stage performance is energetic, dynamic and highly entertaining.

Bergvliet High School

The Bergvliet High School Senior Jazz Band is an extraordinary representation of their schools music department. In recent years, the jazz band has performed on two local TV shows, Hectic Nine 9 and Expresso and has also taken the stage at the Cape Town Big Band Jazz Festival. Members of this group enjoy sharing a passion for music.

 

Belhar High School

Lead by Miss Muller, Belhar High School has recently started a jazz band. The band is comprised of students who are passionate about music and contributing unique South African sounds that they believe makes our country a diverse nation.

 

Wynberg Girls High School

The Wynberg Girls Band has grown since forming in 2009, and now comprises of 25 girls under the leadership of Dayna Pearce. For the past three years the band has made it to the finals of the Band Slam and have received the spirit award and cash prize on numerous occasions. They regularly perform in public and their repertoire includes a wide range of genres from swing to pop.

Parel Vallei High School

The Parel Vallei Show Band will perform a set of only original songs written by the learners and produced by their mentor, Duncan Combe. The catchy numbers will get everyone in the mood to dance.

 

Norman Henshilwood High School

The Norman Henshilwood four-piece band is a group of young talented musicians who are determined to leave the audience with a memorable performance. Their genre of music ranges from jazz to local African music and a variety of modern pop and R&B.

The Bishops Diocesan College band known as “The Groove”, is a special Pop-rock band that has graced the halls of their school since they arrived in grade eight. Over the years, the band welcomed new members and has continued to create a variety of music including original songs written by the band members themselves.

Bridgetown High School

The Bridgetown High school music group was formed as part of the school’s principal, Mr Andrew Windvogel’s vision to develop students academically and artistically. Students are from previously disadvantaged townships such as Bridgetown. The music group will perform a variety of genres such as jazz, R&B, Pop and old school classics.

 

Elsies River High School

This school has a rich cultural and academic history despite not having many resources. Some of the band’s accolades include being 2015 and 2016 High School Jam Champions, 2016 and 2017 Band Slam Champions and performing at the 2016 Cape Town International Jazz Festival. The school strives to offer students platforms such as the High School Band Slam where they can express themselves creatively.
