The Celeb Feasts with Zola show has been cooking up fantastic recipes, with some of South Africa’s best-loved personalities bringing laughs, some moving moments and lots of fun into award-winning, television chef Zola Nene’s kitchen.
In March the wonderful lineup continues, kicked off on 5 March with the soulful singer-songwriter Zahara, accompanied by her mentor Mojalefa ‘Majakes’ Thebe, the Sowetan-born singer, songwriter and music producer. Zahara who has been singing, literally since she was 6 years old, is best known for her award-winning debut album Loliwe. Last year this lady with the big heart had a traumatic experience when she was stabbed by people she was trying to give food to, miraculously managing to escape before they could get into her car. The two good friends, with the help of Zola, cooked up a wonderful meal. Starting with mussels in an aromatic white wine broth, a main meal of rice stuffed pork chops with mustard and cultured cream, they ended off this taste-sensation with froyo sundaes made with peanut chocolate sauce and praline.
Today 12th March, Zola has a fellow award-winning, celebrity chef in her kitchen. After a few years in the investment banking industry, Lentswe Bhengu hung up his suit for a chef’s apron and has gone from strength to strength. He brings his mentor – and sister – Swankie Mafoko, the actress best known for her role as Eshe on the SABC2 telenovela Keeping Score, into Zola’s kitchen. The beautiful Mafonko has been vocal about challenges facing black woman actresses in this male-dominated business.
Before her guests arrive, Zola makes roasted butternut, pine nuts and cottage cheese with mint flavoured yoghurt. When they arrive, they make pilaf with herb crusted fish as a main and for dessert, a fruit and wine jelly parfait. The three have lots to talk and laugh about as the show goes on.
The young and upcoming star, Ayanda McKayi, is next in Zola’s kitchen. He brings along his mentor, the renowned casting director, Bonnie Lee Bouman. The two chat and celebrate their wonderful working relationship with Zola, and, of course, cook up a storm. They make a roasted tomato tart, chicken sausage stuffed rice balls for the main dish and a beautiful peppermint crisp trifle for dessert. Catch this show on 19 March 2019.
The winner of Idols 2015, Karabo Mogane, hits Zola’s festive kitchen on 26 March, with his beautiful sister, and mentor, Kholofelo Mogane. Karabo, who struggled with the instant fame after his Idols win, is a man with a fresh outlook on life and he is very proud of the single he released last year called Nginothando. The siblings – with the help of Zola – cook up a simple but delicious meal. They make rice and baby marrow fritters with smoked salmon and herbed yoghurt as starters. Oxtail stew with dumplings is served as the main course, with a peach and blueberry strudel for dessert.
Singer and song-writer Langa Mavuso, known for his unique and beautiful voice, is Zola’s fabulous guest for the final episode of the season on 2 April. His album Liminal Sketches was released in 2016 and since then this talented musician has been thriving. He is joined by his mentor, the acclaimed jazz singer and songwriter Zoe Modiga, who has been nominated and won various awards for her music.
The two friends cook up a delicious three-course meal, starting with spicy fish cakes with pineapple salsa, creamy pork medallions for main course and a dessert of brûléed chocolate rice pudding. A winning menu to end off this spectacular season.
