Cape Town Stuff!
STATEMENT BY THE CITY’S EXECUTIVE MAYOR, PATRICIA DE LILLE
It has come to my attention that my name is being used in what appears to be a phishing scam.
Thus far, five separate messages have been reported to my office. Each of the e-mails has been sent from the following e-mail address: firstname.lastname@example.org. The subject line of four of the emails is ‘BRICS Bank funding’.
Please note that this e-mail address does not belong to me.
It would appear that a fake Facebook profile is being used to solicit contact details. Once the e-mail address is received, an e-mail is sent to said address asking whether the recipient would be able to use grant funds worth £450 000 (R9 739 448) from the BRICS bank to ‘explore job opportunities for our citizens’. Once they agree, they are added to a beneficiary list and asked to pay £250 (R5 415) in order to obtain a BRICS non-residential beneficiary form.
This afternoon I met with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to open a case for further investigation.
Members of the public are urged not to respond to e-mails coming from this account. I would also like to make an appeal to residents to forward these e-mails to email@example.com so that we can have record of them and hand them over to the SAPS to assist in their investigation.
The City’s new micro-tunnelling machine has a number of features set to speed up the digging of underground tunnels to lay sewer pipes, as part of the R250 million Sanitation Master Plan. Read more below:
The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Department has taken delivery of a new piece of machinery set to expedite its bulk sewer upgrade programme.
The AVN 800 XC Herrenknecht micro-tunnelling machine was acquired at a cost of just over R10,6 million and comes with technology that enables safe, fast and efficient tunnelling in even the most difficult pipe jacking projects.
The machine has been used in more than 1 000 projects around the world. It is controlled with a laser navigation system that allows for precise positioning, has a built-in crusher that can reduce boulders to smaller pieces, and offers extra safety in less stable geological conditions (which is useful for tunneling operations in the sandy Cape Flats soil). CAPE TOWN. – Robin Peterson and Justin Kemp, two names intimately associated with a golden period in the rich history of the Cape Cobras, will leave the franchise at the end of the season. Kemp will retire from first-class cricket at the end of the 2015/2016-season after a splendid career in which he featured in four tests and 85 One Day Internationals for South Africa.
He was a major factor in assisting the Cobras to lift ten trophies in the past eight seasons as belligerent middle-order batsman, dependable and probing medium-pacer and one of the best poachers of a cricket ball ever produced by Western Province and the Cobras. In 58 domestic one-day cup matches, he struck 1246 runs at an average of 31.94, while capturing 38 wickets. He also assembled 1691 four-day runs and captured 83 wickets at an average of 27.45.
As a slip-fielder, his name is mentioned in the same breath as Brian McMillan and Neil Johnson as three of the finest who ever played the game under the Oaks. He was a devastating finisher in one-day cricket. Kemp’s 89-ball unbeaten century against India at PPC Newlands for South Africa in 2006 is still fondly remembered. Continue reading
