Marmalade Productions & Alistair Izobell Productions present yet another music spectacular show this winter. This time Rocking the City 2017 will take you on a trip down memory lane and remind you of the good times. Both established music promoters, both brands giving value to their audience, both creating opportunities for young and upcoming stars and giving our legends a fresh platform. Between the two companies, over 200 000 fans have experienced their brand of success.
Rocking the City 2017 will feature: Dawnay, MarcAlex, The Boyz, Da Ballies & Essential. The best Cape Town musicians will support this stellar line-up.
Dawnay: In a career that has spanned over thirty years, Dawnay is a respected artist, a much-loved live performer, songwriter, singer, producer and musician – with the rare combination of drums and vocals remaining his first passion. His first single, “U Touch Me” achieved massive success and paved the way for many follow-up singles – “High … Oops Baby”, “You’re my World”, the solid groove club anthem, “The Real Thing”, “My Baby Tonight” and “Coon Carnival”. He has opened for many international stars and received many accolades including a SAMA nomination for Best Pop Album.
MarcAlex: Brothers born and raised in Soweto, their love of music started at a very young age. Always believing in themselves after many disappointments, created their iconic South African hit song “Quick Quick”, which took them to the top of the charts on all radio stations around the country. They later went on to win an OKTV (now SAMA) award for Best New Comer/ Group with this incredible song. MarcAlex then signed to an international label giving them the opportunity to work with the best producers. The brothers spent years performing around the world horning their craft. They took some time out and started a successful management and events company. But, music will always be their first love. MarcAlex have been hard at work writing and producing their first album in years.

COMPETITION:
Alistair Izobell Productions Presents:
Soli Philander’s “Nice Coat” (Lekker Jas!)
17th – 29th July
Baxter Theatre
Soli Philander’s ‘Nice Coat’ is about – as he puts it – HIS Cape Town.
Born out of a desire for a narrative about Cape Town – the place of his birth, his youth, his heart – that didn’t serve a political agenda, wasn’t an exercise in attracting tourists, and did not disregard the daily, stark realities so many Capetonians in surviving must embrace.
Fuelled by the desire not to defend or deflect accusations levelled at The Mother City – her detractors on the inside and out – or wallow in the praise and pride from those enamoured by her, but rather to provide another view, another ‘take’, another conversation about the place he calls home, and his experience of it.
Philander is adamant about the unique ‘sound’ of Cape Town – ‘there is a rhythm to it, a beat’ – that he maintains is the essence of ‘being Capetonian’. In his observations about, his criticism of, his tribute to the place he calls home, he seamlessly plays with word and intonation, idiom and phrase, rhyme and reason, to engage mind, memory and emotion in a delicately-humoured, hour-long rhyme.
When asked ‘why?’ about the rhyme, Soli responded: ‘I didn’t realize for a long time that the instinctive love I have for rhyming is cultural – from the games we made up as children, the secret languages we invented as teens, the delightful playing with words of the hawkers, and even organized crime’s penchant for inventing new words or new meanings for existing ones’
