Speedster Seabelo Senatla on fire with nine tries in four matches

The Springbok Sevens defeated New Zealand 14-7 in their Cup quarterfinal match on Sunday morning at the Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas to book a semi-final showdown with Australia at the USA event.

Seabelo Senatla scored two first half tries for the South Africans, who then delivered a huge defensive effort to restrict New Zealand to just one score in the second half.

Senatla has now scored nine tries in four matches at the three-day tournament, which is the fifth stop on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series circuit.

The other semi-final will be contested between the USA and Fiji, who currently share a three way tie on top of the World Series standings with South Africa and New Zealand.

In the other three quarterfinal matches, the USA defeated Kenya 26-14, Fiji powered to a 43-7 win over Japan and Australia edged Argentina by 26-12.

DHL Stormers, Cell C Sharks, Emirates Lions register back-to-back victories

Vodacom Bulls end six-match losing run

It was a pleasant weekend for South Africa’s Vodacom Super Rugby franchises with four of the five teams in action winning their respective matches in a rewarding second round.

The Emirates Lions delivered a solid performance all around to earn a famous 36-32 victory against the Chiefs on tour, which marked their first win in Hamilton since the competition’s inception. The victory also marked back-to-back wins for the Johannesburg team in the 2016 edition of the Vodacom Super Rugby competition and their fourth consecutive overseas victory in the tournament.

In Pretoria the Vodacom Bulls registered a rewarding 45-25 victory against the Rebels at Loftus Versfeld as they outscored the visitors six tries to four. While coach Nollis Marais and his team will be disappointed about allowing their tries bonus point to slip away after leading 42-3 in the second half, the win was significant as it ended a six-match losing streak for the side. The Springbok Sevens are very aware of the threat posed by their three pool opponents for this weekend’s Las Vegas Sevens, which kicks off early on Saturday morning (SA time).

The South Africans will be looking to bounce back to winning ways after coming unstuck in their last two knock-out matches at the Sydney Sevens in Australia, where they finished in fourth place despite injuries to several squad members.

Las Vegas has been a happy hunting ground for the Springbok Sevens recently, with the team winning the USA title no fewer than three times in the past five years.

However, for this edition, the Springbok Sevens find themselves in a tough pool consisting of hosts, USA, the strong and physical Canada and tenacious Wales. The first two teams on the log qualify for the Cup quarter-finals after the teams have played three round-robin matches. Continue reading
