South Africa’s remarkable and versatile Paralympic athlete Pieter du Preez has been nominated for the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability Award, following his outstanding performances in 2015.
Du Preez won double gold medals in the time trial and road race In the H1 class at the Para-Cycling World Championships and finished the season No.1 in the world rankings. In wheelchair competition, the 35-year-old broke the 10,000 metres T51 world record and set new African records in the 200, 1,500 and 10,000 metres. He is the 2015 world No.1 at 800, 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000 metres. Back in 2013, he famously became the first quadriplegic to complete an ironman triathlon.
He said: “It is one of the biggest honours in my life and I am extremely humbled to be nominated for a Laureus World Sports Award. I am very proud to represent not only my country, South Africa, but also quadriplegics and tetraplegics all over the world.” Continue reading
Gimmies edge Paul Roos
Week two of the Premier Inter-schools competition saw Paarl Gimnasium defeat Paul Roos 28 – 24 in front of their home crowd in Paarl.
Both teams scored 4 tries a piece in a stop start game. The home side dominated up front for most of the match while the visitors made too many mistakes.

The antioxidant-rich Rooibos tea is best-known for its health benefits, but according to South Africa’s top gardening gurus, it’s also a must for every garden.
Margaret Roberts, a prominent figure in the world of gardening and natural health has been using Rooibos for composting ever since she can remember. She says Rooibos makes a fantastic natural fertilizer as it contains nutrients and trace minerals beneficial to plant growth.
“Instead of throwing away your used Rooibos tea leaves or bags, use it along with other vegetable and fruit peelings to make a balanced compost mix. Our thriving Herbal Centre near Hartbeespoort dam keeps compost heaps going in much the same way with Rooibos tea being among the critical compostable materials. Hosted at The BASE Berlin, the event was an energectic festival of sport and activity, with youngsters from Laureus projects KICKFORMORE, Kicking Girls, KICK im Boxring and HIGH FIVE skateboarding programme all taking part in sporting activities at BASE Berlin. The highly anticipated Lip Sync Battle Africa will make its free-to-air premiere next Saturday, 23 April, at 6:05PMon e.tv. The internationally acclaimed show, which features celebrities battling each other in a lip sync duel of popular songs, now has an African flavour for local audiences to enjoy.
The first episode features Club 808 host Boity Thulo taking on hip-hop star Cassper Nyovest. The second episode, which airs on 30 April, will be a battle of the radio DJ’s with Thando Thabethe against Lerato Kganyago. Upcoming episodes of the show will feature all types of African celebrities. Comedians, musicians, models and actors will battle each other every week to win the prestigious Lip Sync Battle Africa title belt. Vredendal High School and Camerata Tinta Barocca present the Matzikama Music Week
At the end of April, some of South Africa’s leading classical music artists will be performing world class music performances and teaching master classes in the heart of the Matzikama.
Vredendal High School, in collaboration with the Camerata Tinta Barocca Baroque Orchestra, presents the Matzikama Music Week from Monday, April 25 to Friday, April 29.
According to Michéle de Villiers, Head of Music at Vredendal High School, 700 students from ten schools have the chance to experience the music of the Camerata Tinta Barocca, led by orchestra director Erik Dippenaar. The school children will also be given the chance to play some of the instruments. Dippenaar is known as a leading harpsichord player and recently performed at the KKNK with Stefan Temmingh in the musical Corelli à la Mode, that was nominated for a Kanna Award. Continue reading
