Durban – The SAPS has to pay more than R1.2 million to compensate an Umhlanga car dealership after an out-of-the-box Jaguar was written off in an accident caused by a policeman.
The black Jaguar F type, V8 SC was the launch vehicle of the model which was being introduced in South Africa at the time. It was valued at more than R1.3 million, but, after the accident – which occurred on the N3 near the Spaghetti Junction a Sunday afternoon in July 2013 – it was sold for scrap for R112 000 and Jaguar Umhlanga sued the minister of police and the policeman for the balance.
In the recent trial before Durban High Court Judge Themba Sishi, the driver, Trevor Clack, employed as the dealership’s brand manager, said he was taking the car on a test drive before the launch in the coming week.
“The sky was blue and the visibility was clear,” he said.
As he passed The Pavilion Shopping Centre, he changed lanes from the extreme right-hand one to the middle one.

“My life looks like a fairy tale in many ways, but you have to remember that life is not a fairy tale. I was the American Idol but at the time I couldn’t even read a fairy tale to my four-year-old daughter,” she revealed in her biography Life is Not a Fairytale.

The City of Cape Town’s Hout Bay Gateway Precinct Project is well under way and is expected to be completed by the end of June 2016. The upgrade of the Imizamo Yethu entrance, in particular, forms part of the City’s broader commitment to this community.
The R5 million Hout Bay Gateway Precinct Project comprises the upgrading of the pedestrian environment along Hout Bay Main Road and Victoria/NR Mandela Roads to provide the community with safer paved walkways to schools, taxis, the MyCiTi stations and the clinic.
The upgrading of the intersection is part of a series of interventions in this area such as the construction of the MyCiTi station and the upgrading of the sports complex.
Further improvements to the area include: paving walkways and larger public spaces; creating retaining walls to stabilise soil embankments; providing low seating walls, lighting and playground equipment; and planting trees. Continue reading

An innovative programme in forestry management is not only creating jobs in some of Knysna’s most vulnerable communities, but also teaching locals about plantations and indigenous forest.
PG Bison, South Africa’s leading diversified timber company, is currently offering the programme to 28 learners, who will be given an opportunity to advance through four forestry qualification levels. They are paid a stipend during their training, and the company has committed to helping them find employment either at PG Bison or at a sub-contractor, once the learners graduate.
The learners will develop a broad skills set in theory and practice. This includes basic mathematics and communication, financial management, as well as subjects specific to forestry like weed control and tree planting. Continue reading
