On behalf of the City of Cape Town, I would like to wish the more than 27 000 runners taking part in the world’s most scenic race, the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, good luck.

To the many runners who will debut this wonderful event and to the thousands who take part each year, I send my best wishes to you all.

We often see how sporting activities are a great unifier, bringing people from all walks of life and all corners of the world together.

This event is one which truly demonstrates how we are all building an inclusive city.

The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon has for many years been uniting people in their love for running.

We have seen this event grow over time, not only in numbers but in its diversity.

It is heartening that the theme of this year’s marathon is ‘Run as One’.

May we all be mindful of what that means, and how we can build on this in our daily lives.

In as much as we are all different, there are many things, like running, which unite us.

To all the runners, may you have a good race and may our beautiful views keep you going as you push towards the finish line.

STATEMENT BY THE CITY’S MAYORAL COMMITTEE MEMBER: TRANSPORT FOR CAPE TOWN, COUNCILLOR BRETT HERRON

The Western Cape High Court late yesterday afternoon, 23 March 2016, granted the City of Cape Town an urgent interdict against violent protesters, among them the Govan Mbeki branch of the South African National Civics Organisation and members of their executive, preventing them from disrupting the MyCiTi service or conducting any protest action at the MyCiTi stations along the T04 trunk route.

The City applied for and was granted an urgent interdict following a week of violent protests at MyCiTi stations along the T04 route in Dunoon and Joe Slovo during which MyCiTi infrastructure was damaged and services disrupted. Further threats of attacks, and the intimidation of City personnel and contractors, and commuters wanting to make use of the service, prompted the City to apply for relief from the court. There are four changes to the DHL Stormers team to face the Jaguares in a historic Vodacom Super Rugby match in Buenos Aires on Saturday.

DHL Stormers Head Coach Robbie Fleck has made three changes and a positional switch to the forward pack that started the 31-11 victory against the Brumbies last week, while there is one injury-enforced change to the backline.

In the front row hooker Scarra Ntubeni makes his first start of the season, with Bongi Mbonambi moving to the replacements bench.

Lock JD Schickerling will make his DHL Stormers starting debut in place of Pieter-Steph du Toit who is being rested and did not travel to Argentina, with Jan de Klerk in line to earn his second DHL Stormers cap from the bench.

Flank Sikhumbuzo Notshe comes back into the starting line-up, with the experienced Schalk Burger set to make an impact from the replacements bench and Nizaam Carr shifting back to No.8

In the backline Leolin Zas gets another opportunity to start after Dillyn Leyds suffered a knee injury in training on Tuesday which ruled him out of the trip to Argentina, which means that Huw Jones comes back into the match-day squad. Continue reading

DIFF’RENT STROKES — Season 2 — Pictured: (l-r) Gary Coleman as Arnold Jackson, Dana Plato as Kimberly Drummond, Todd Bridges as Willis Jackson — Photo by: Herb Ball/NBC/NBCU Photo Bank

It was one of the most successful American sitcoms of the late 1970s and 1980s and made Gary Coleman and the often repeated line “What you talkin’ about, Willis?” famous with television viewers around the world.

Diff’rent Strokes’ focused on two black kids from Harlem, Arnold Jackson and older brother Willis, who are welcomed into the family of wealthy New York businessman Philip Drummond and his daughter when their mother, his housekeeper, passes away.

Its three young stars – Coleman, Todd Bridges and Dana Plato – soon became wealthy but the real cost of their childhood fame is revealed in Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of Diff’rent Strokes  which airs on True Movies (DStv Channel 138) on Tuesday, March 29, at 20h45.
And it isn’t a cute, pretty or funny story as both Coleman and Bridges reveal in the film, giving their sides of the story. Continue reading

A man had to be hospitalised after breaking a leg while trying to escape from the City’s Vice Squad when they raided a brothel in the CBD. Read more below:

The City of Cape Town’s Vice Squad and Liquor Enforcement Units had numerous successes in the last week during a series of autonomous and joint operations focusing on prostitution and illegal liquor sales.

On Wednesday 16 March 2016, the Vice Squad conducted a joint operation with the Hawks on a suspected brothel in the Cape Town central business district. They arrested four women for prostitution. While searching the premises, a client who was in one of the rooms on the second floor tried to escape by jumping through the window. The man smashed the window frame and fractured his leg upon landing on the ground. He was transported to Groote Schuur hospital for treatment.

‘Fortunately for this man, pain and embarrassment are the worst of his woes as current legislation doesn’t provide for a client using the services of a prostitute to be charged unless they are caught in the act. Had he known that, I imagine he would not have turned stuntman,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith. Continue reading
