(South Africa, March 2016) Absa will once again be recognising and rewarding teamwork and perseverance at the 2016 Absa Cape Epic with the #ConquerAsOne campaign. At each stage of the race, an extraordinary #ConquerAsOne moment will be identified and recognised, where a team showed immense human spirit to overcome their own personal challenges to conquer that stage together.

During this year’s race, a panel of judges will select one #ConquerAsOne moment on each day of the race. The winning pair will be announced in the Absa Pride Hospitality area where they will receive a unique #ConquerAsOne jersey to wear proudly during the next day’s stage. At the end of the week, the judges will then select the overall #ConquerAsOne moment,  with the winning team walking away with an Absa Pride entry for the 2017 Absa Cape Epic. Continue reading

An estimated 50 000 excited spectators flocked to the Green Point Fan Walk on Saturday, 12 March, eager to be a part of the Mother City’s biggest party. The Cape Town Carnival once again blew fans away with a procession that included floats like Traffic Hazard, Township Angel and Heart of the City, and over 2 000 incredible performers.

As the 1.2km Cape Town Carnival corridor came alive with music and colour, VIPs such as Premier Helen Zille, Mayor Patricia de Lille, along with Cape Town Carnival brand ambassadors, Siv Ngesi and Liezel van der Westhuizen were in the center of the action.

Jay Douwes, CEO of Cape Town Carnival, said: “After the success of last year, we were aiming to make this year’s Carnival bigger and better. A goal we achieved with flying colours. Anticipation was high and there were more spectators than ever before, testament that the city loves this event as much as we do. It was a beautiful Cape evening and the Fan Walk was the perfect setting to celebrate both our diversity and unity.”

· South Africans close the gap on frontrunners Fiji to one point

The Springbok Sevens moved to within one point of leaders Fiji at the top of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series standings despite suffering a close-fought 19-14 loss against New Zealand at the inaugural Canadian Sevens tournament in Vancouver on Monday morning (SA time).

New Zealand led 14-7 at halftime and successfully starved the Blitzboks of scoring opportunities by slowing the pace of the game and controlling ball possession and territory. It was heartbreak for the Springbok Sevens, who suffered their only loss of the tournament in the Cup final following impressive performances in the pool and knockout stages.

Rosko Specman and Justin Geduld were the South African try scorers in the Cup final, while Sam Dickson, Kurt Baker and Lewis Ormond dotted down for the Kiwis. Continue reading
