GrandWest Corporate Social Investment has reaffirmed its corporate citizenship commitment by partnering with AIMS (African Institute for Mathematical Sciences) to offer maths enrichment workshops for Grade 12 learners from Gugulethu.

GrandWest Corporate Social Investment, which also runs a bursary programme to offer previously disadvantaged learners the opportunity to pursue tertiary studies in maths, science and technology, is sponsoring the weekly maths enrichment classes for over 100 learners from ID Mkize Secondary School and Gugulethu Comprehensive Secondary School. The classes will run until the middle of June 2016.“The poor level of maths and science education in South African schools, particularly in poor schools, means that learners are not adequately prepared or able to enter tertiary education in the fields of maths and science.

“We are pleased to be in a position to partner with AIMS’ in Gugulethu to empower Grade 12 learners with the knowledge and tools to improve their performance in maths,” says Heidi Edson, Group Socio Economic Development Manager at GrandWest.

AIMS is a centre for education and research in Cape Town that works to promote mathematics and science in Africa, recruit and train talented students and teachers and build initiatives in education, research, and technology. AIMS was established in 2003 as a partnership project between the University of Cambridge, University of Cape Town, Oxford University, University of Paris Sud XI, University of Stellenbosch and the University of the Western Cape.

The Saturday Maths Enrichment Classes, which are hosted at ID Mkize Secondary School, are facilitated by AIMS students (Masters and PhD students). The students come from different parts of Africa. Through the Saturday Maths Enrichment Classes, the participating Grade 11 and 12 students have had an opportunity to associate with “peers” from Sudan, Kenya, Egypt, Nigeria, Mauritius, Ghana, Zambia and their fellow South African compatriots.  Feedback from the learners attending the classes has been encouraging.
