Stokvel groups around the country were invited to enter the 2016 Stokvel Cooking Challenge, sponsored by White Star Super Maize Meal and Royco® in partnership with Move! Magazine, to show off their creative culinary skills and win a share of the R50 000 cash prize. Stokvels responded overwhelmingly to the call, submitting recipes, their photographs and motivation as to why they should be considered to take part in the cook-off. Now, the top three in four regions have been selected to take part in the semi-final round.
On Saturday, 14 May the Eastern Cape semi-finals will kick-off at the Powertrade Cash & Carry, Taxi City based in East London, The Golden Girls, Siyancendana and S’nako Stokvel will start the cooking challenge at 11:30am where they will have to showcase their culinary skills to the star judges – singer, actress and White Star celebrity chef, Lucia Mthiyane, and MasterChef SA 2014 runner-up, Siphokazi Mdlankomo. Each stokvel was asked how they started their Stokvel:
The Golden Girls Stokvel started out by contributing a R100 towards their member’s Birthdays. They later then decided to make this formal and officially started their Stokvel. They group is now planning to grow the Stokvel into a catering business that will assist them to generate more income for the group.
Siyancendana launched their Stokvel to overcome the budgetary constraints after the December holiday period and ever since then they grew the Stokvel on a monthly basis by donating money to a member every month.
Motivating and supporting women is the main goal for the S’nako Stokvel Group. They encourage entrepreneurship and improvement of living standards within their community by means of providing funding where it’s needed most. The group also invests in assisting with funding for funerals, parties and weddings.
According to White Star Marketing Manager, Mokhele Makhothi, “We feel incredibly proud to be part of enabling these Stokvels to make a difference to their communities.”
“We look forward to seeing and tasting the delicious dishes that the Stokvels will be creating,” adds Royco® Senior Brand Manager, Khosi Snondo.”
