A pilot project between the City and FEDHASA Cape will see 20 young people placed in the hospitality industry for on-the-job training and work experience. Read more below:

The City of Cape Town’s Social Development and Early Childhood Development Directorate is finalising a Memorandum of Agreement with the Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa (FEDHASA Cape) for the placement and training of 20 young people who have participated in the City’s Youth Development Programme (details of the programme are available here:

The pilot project, which has been some time in the making, was approved by full Council in August 2016, paving the way for the agreement to be finalised. The project will see FEDHASA Cape initiate and follow their own training criteria and framework to accomplish the set objective of enhancing the participants’ chances of permanent employment, while the City will pay them a stipend from Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) funding.‘This project is the realisation of a vision we have been building on for several years now – to extend the EPWP through partnerships with the private sector. The programme has been very successful to date, but if we are to create even more opportunities for the hundreds of thousands of unemployed residents, we have to start looking outside the sphere of government and this is a perfect opportunity to test whether it could work,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Social Development and Early Childhood Development, Councillor Suzette Little.

Forty candidates aged between 18 and 25 will be invited to participate in a structured interview process – 20 of them will be selected for the 12-month programme which includes a one-week induction period focusing on the industry and outlining the objectives and expectations linked to the programme. Once candidates are placed, they will be mentored against a list of agreed outcomes with quarterly progress evaluations.

‘The EPWP funding will afford our organisation the opportunity to assist and train future ambassadors of the hospitality industry, thus facilitating the continued growth and development of one of South Africa’s most thriving sectors,’ said the Chairperson of FEDHASA Cape, Rob Kucera.

At the end of the programme, a final assessment will take place against the list of outcomes and, if found competent, the candidate will be issued with a certificate. The overarching aim is to ensure that candidates are absorbed into the hospitality industry either temporarily or permanently at the end of the programme.

‘The success of this project will guide us on where we take our Expanded Public Works Programme in the future. There have already been discussions about tapping into other industries with similar projects if this proves successful. Not only will it mean more opportunities for more job seekers, but it will also improve the chances of converting short-term work opportunities into more long-term prospects and therefore improve the income potential of families in our city who need it the most,’ added Councillor Little.
