In celebration of Heritage day Jonathan Rubain will be staging Golden Gospel Memories to celebrate the Heritage of Cape Town’s gospel legends on 24 September 2016 at His People, N1 City. The production brings artists and groups from the golden years to perform on one stage for an inspiring and uplifting heritage celebration.

The show features some amazing artists in the gospel music industry uniting together for one special performance only. The star-studded line-up will be hosted by gospel and jazz artist Jonathan Rubain who’ll be joined on stage by exceptional musical greats that include Lionel Petersen, Glen Robertson, Alban Petersen and many more golden ‘oldies’ that will wow audiences.

Early in his career Rubain started out playing gospel music in the local church and his community, and was later inspired by these musicians. Constantly being surrounded by music whilst growing up, he began his journey with mentors such as Mac Mckenzie and Hilton Schilder and discovered his passion for bass guitar. He now leads The Jonathan Rubain Band which was formed in 2007 and is a favourite at festivals in and around Cape Town. He’s played with legends such as Errol Dyers, Robbie Jansen and the Cape Jazz Band. “With this show, I’d like to take the audience on a reminiscent journey of seeing their favourite gospel artists perform again from that golden era and to honour and celebrate the legends from that time.”Lionel Petersen is one of the leading performing artist’s of gospel music in South Africa who’s recognized in the industry for his R&B and gospel sound. Over the years he’s collaborated with artists such as Chevelle Franklin, Neville D and Judith Sepuma. He featured on the soundtrack of the Hansie Cronje film in 2008, and was chosen as a judge during the first season of the Gospel reality competition Shine in 2010. When Lionel is not performing on stage he is a preacher in his community.

Glenn Robertson is a renowned jazz and gospel artist who has become a stalwart in the industry. His musical influences came largely from that of Al Jarreau, Nat King Cole and Jimmy Messina. He was a founding member of the band Airborne and a leading vocalist for the Tony Schilder Trio during his career. Another golden legend who is no stranger in the industry is Alban Petersen. Today he’s a household name in the gospel music arena having built a successful career over the years having recorded ten albums to date.

Other gospel groups forming part of this exciting line-up include Solid Foundation and Christian Explainers who have remained front runners on the local gospel scene where most music veterans have drawn their inspiration from. Bands like the Soul Seekers, Witness and Jesus Company will be accompanying these groups as well on stage.

This heritage event is set to honour these gospel greats from the golden years, bringing back the nostalgia, praise and musical sounds of these multi-talented legendary artists.
