The Vanilla is a 4-piece feel-good pop band from the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town. The band consists of Tyan Odendal on guitar and lead vocals, Jaen-Pierre Dowling on bass, Francois Keyser on drums and Barthlo Visagie on lead guitar and synth. Since they launched in March 2015, the band has been building a recognizable brand within the South African music industry. They have performed at some of the most prestigious venues in Cape Town, played with various big-name artists and secured great performance slots at 3 music festivals (OppiKoppi, Up The Creek & River Republic).

The Vanilla`s new single “Canopies” has just been released to radio stations nationwide. The band commissioned Dolf Willemse – producer and bassist for Francois van Coke, to produce a few singles for them. Using a home recording setup, Dolf and the band tracked and produced the single over a period of two days. Thereafter, Dolf went back to his studio in Potchefstroom to mix the song, and Rogan Kelsey took care of the track’s mastering. The original idea for the song was written and composed by Tristan Coetzee of December Streets. Having worked with Tristan on many occasions, Dolf presented the song to the band and the band went ahead and rearranged and recorded the song with Dolf. Vocalist Tyan Odendal says: “We are very excited about the new single release. We have had great feedback and airplay for our two previous singles, especially “The Sun`s Tide”:

The song’s mantra of feel-the-rhythm-and-take it-slow has (been) playing on repeat in my head, a testament to its catchiness…” – Carrie Allen(texxandthecity.com)

“The Vanilla are the newest indie pop sensation on the South African scene, or at least they will be once you catch a whiff of their debut single” – Craig Roxburgh (www.samusicscene.co.za)

The Vanilla masterfully let sweeping guitar riffs do the talking as they put together a textbook perfect indie-pop track, fully equipped with the catchiest of hooks and the most playful of vocals.” – Edmond Wiafe [Australia] (www.bestbefore.co)

The Sun’s Tide” reached number 1 on the PUK FM93.6 “Local Top 30” and also featured on MFM’s “top 5 most requested songs of the week..

Bok Radio’s listeners nominated the band in three categories for its prestigious “Bokkie Awards” ceremony in October 2016. The band will be competing in the “Newcomer of the Year”, “Group of the Year” and “Song of the Year” categories against artists like Jeremy Loops, Die Heuwels Fantasties, Elvis Blue, Loki Rothman, Heinz Winckler etc.
