The City of Cape Town is gearing up for another bumper summer season, starting with the switch-on of the festive lights at the Grand Parade on Sunday 4 December 2016.

Along with a high-tech stage in front of the City Hall, a video-mapping experience, and a line-up of top South African artists, an aspiring Cape Town band or artist will have the chance to be discovered and appear on the festive lights stage. And the public gets to choose who this will be.

This unique element means that all Capetonians will be able to vote for an undiscovered local act that they want to see become a star at this year’s switch-on of the festive lights.

This exciting and interactive aspect of this year’s event is a demonstration of our commitment to building an inclusive city by celebrating all our residents and their talents.

The search for Cape Town’s next big music act in the Festive Lights Challenge will be run on – a new social video talent platform now launching in South Africa. On talented artists participate in challenges by uploading their videos and then sharing their entries across their social media platforms in an effort to attract likes.

The site’s unique algorithm aggregates ‘likes’ across all platforms, resulting in an artist’s standing on the ‘buzz meter’, with the winner being the one who attracts the most ‘buzz points’.

The winner will perform on stage at Cape Town’s largest free, open-air public event alongside top South African artists and also receive a R10 000 cash prize.

The theme for this year’s festive lights switch-on is ‘Let’s get on with it Cape Town – City of Ideas’ and celebrations start at 16:00 on the Grand Parade.

Last year the event saw more than 80 000 people come together to usher in the holiday period, with leading South African acts on stage in a night that represented a truly Cape Town celebration.

This year I will lead the festive lights countdown amid an explosion of music, dance, lasers and staging effects, culminating in the video-mapping of the City Hall façade.

This year’s event is expected to be one of the best yet, with some spectacular stage elements and lighting. The line-up features some of the country’s top artists and will be announced soon.
