STATEMENT BY THE CITY’S EXECUTIVE MAYOR, PATRICIA DE LILLE
This week I will travel to Mexico City to speak at the biannual C40 Mayors Summit 2016 – the world’s foremost gathering of political, business and intellectual leaders focused on forging a resilient, low-carbon urban future.
The Summit, hosted by the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40) and Mexico City Mayor, Miguel Ángel Mancera, will take place from 30 November to 2 December 2016.
Speakers will include more than 30 mayors from the world’s largest and most influential cities, business leaders of Fortune 500 companies, elected officials at all levels of government, prominent non-governmental organisation leaders, internationally renowned climate experts, and celebrity activists.I am honoured to represent Cape Town among world leaders in climate change where I will engage with my fellow C40 mayors who are acting boldly and being the disruptive forces to bring about effective projects to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change.
In the C40 network we have invaluable opportunities to learn best practice solutions from other leading cities on how we can effectively respond to climate change and build more resilient cities. C40 mayors are proof that cities are the drivers of change and we must lead the way in tackling climate change.
At the Summit I will highlight the sustainability efforts of the City of Cape Town and how we are adapting to climate change and at the same time building a resilient, low-carbon city for future generations to inherit.
The C40 Mayors Summit offers an unparalleled opportunity for Cape Town to showcase its commitment to sustainability on an international stage. Not only will the Summit provide the chance to interface directly with the most relevant stakeholders from around the world, but it will also afford us the occasion to share our city’s successes with international media.
The C40 Mayors Summit Host and Mexico City Mayor, Miguel Ángel Mancera, said: ‘We are pleased to be hosting the next C40 Mayors Summit and working together with other mayors who are also leading the global fight against climate change. This event will enable mayors from all over the world to share knowledge and set their agenda for climate policy and deliver concrete actions for the sustainability of our cities’.
C40 President of the Board, United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change, and 108th Mayor of New York City, Michael R. Bloomberg, said: ‘Mexico City is a great example of the leadership that cities are showing in confronting climate change, and of the immediate benefits – like cleaner air, less traffic congestion, and better mass transit – that those efforts can bring. It is a fitting place for mayors to come together to share smart strategies that reduce carbon footprints, strengthen economies, and improve lives’.
In addition, winners of the annual 2016 C40 Cities Awards – which recognise excellence in urban sustainability – will be announced alongside the Summit at a ceremony on the evening of 1 December 2016.
The awards selection committee has selected two of Cape Town’s projects as finalists:
- Energy and Climate Programme: Energy2040 Programme and Energy and Climate Action Plan, in the ‘Climate Action Plans and Inventories’ category
- Transit-Orientated Development Strategic Framework, March 2016, in the ‘Sustainable Communities’ category
We are honoured that our efforts are being internationally recognised by the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group – a network of the world’s leading cities in the international efforts to combat and respond to climate change.
C40 received 160 applications from 75 cities across the globe, showcasing the world’s most innovative policies and programmes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve resiliency to climate change.
Last year during the international climate talks, COP21, the City of Cape Town was the winner in the 2015 C40 Cities Awards for its Water Conservation and Water Demand Management Programme.
