“Die ander kant”, is a 12 minute documentary investigating what there is to lose if Afrikaans is finally abolished as tertiary teaching language. Led by Mercy Kanneyemer, who believes that Afrikaans needs a ‘face-lift’. Various influential people are interviewed, including Helen Zille, Willa Boezak, Rhoda Kadalie, writers and students. The documentary aims to shine light on the side of Afrikaans that is often silenced.
At University level the Afrikaans debate is shied away from, since it is still seen as an oppressive language and not as a language of liberation. Afrikaans can empower people, but the face of Afrikaans needs to change first. Die brown voice behind the documentary points out who and what exactly is at stake if Afrikaans is abolished as tertiary teaching language.
I would love to create further awareness for this, especially since there is so much at stake.
