The DA in the Western Cape welcomes the progress report of a forensic investigation into allegations of fraud, corruption and other financial misconduct in the Kannaland Municipality.
The report which was on Friday tabled before the local council has found that at least five purported appointments were irregularly made by deviating from the normal, competitive procurement process and without following the required supply chain management prescripts.
The investigation further found possible irregular expenditure amounting to R14 741 584.06.
These findings are vital, because between 2011 and 2016, which is the period that’s been under investigation, the Municipality was led by an ANC – ICOSA coalition.
I commend Minister Anton Bredell and his department for their excellent work in seeking to address the blatant misuse of public funds. I’m also pleased that it’s been recommended that those implicated and still employed by the Municipality should be disciplined and that SAPS ought to conduct a criminal investigation.
Addressing the maladministration will help this Municipality, to in the future also receive a clean audit. Furthermore, it will ensure that services and infrastructure are actually delivered to the residents of the area.
As the DA in the Western Cape we will continue to adhere with our mandate of good, clean, corruption-free governance.
