The SA Rugby Women’s Interprovincial Competition got off to a flying start on Saturday as the three winning teams all scored over 40 points to make a strong statement in the opening round of the A division.

Border, who won the last four titles, registered the biggest score of the weekend as they outplayed Eastern Province 52-3 at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, while KwaZulu-Natal overpowered the Free State 43-5 at Old Greys Rugby Club and Western Province registered a convincing 41-13 win against the Blue Bulls at Loftus Versfeld.

Border produced a solid performance on attack and defence against their Eastern Cape neighbours, and built up an encouraging 21-3 lead at the break, before increasing their try tally to eight in the second half. Eastern Province, in turn, only managed to score a penalty goal in the match, as they battled to make their mark.

KwaZulu-Natal also dominated their clash against the Free State from the outset as they cruised to a 26-0 lead in the first half, and then continued this solid form in the second half to score a total of seven tries in the match, while they leaked only one, for the 43-5 victory.

Western Province, meanwhile, overcame a tightly fought first half against the Blue Bulls at Loftus Versfeld in which they led 14-8, to break away with five second half tries, while they conceded two tries in the match and a penalty goal, handing them a 41-13 victory. Western Province Prop Babalwa Latshe and fullback Vuyolwethu Maqholo each scored twice in a memorable start to the season.

The teams will return to the field for the second round of the competition on Saturday 22 July.
