Cape Town, 22 August 2017 — In a first for the Currie Cup, fans at the DHL Western Province and Cell C Sharks match at Newlands will be captured on FANCAM and be able to tag themselves in a high-resolution picture on social media.

Described as the ‘ultimate crowd selfie’, the FANCAM technology was developed in South Africa and over the past seven years has featured at major events around the world. Now Currie Cup partner, DirectAxis Financial Services, is bringing it back home.

From Taylor Swift and U2 concerts to the Super Bowl, UEFA Champions League final and Daytona 500, fans have been able to visit a dedicated website, zoom in, find themselves on an interactive 360o image and share it with friends and family on their social media accounts. There’s even a permanent FANCAM at Madison Square Garden, home to the New York Rangers and Knicks.

Currie Cup supporters can register on before the game to be notified when the image goes live.

As well as seeing themselves at Newlands, fans who visit will also be able to look for the Currie Cup, which has been virtually hidden in the stadium. Anyone who finds it stands a chance to win a VIP trip to the Currie Cup final. DirectAxis will take the FANCAM to two other DHL Western Province games, two Xerox Golden Lions games and the final.

This is the second innovation it has brought fans as part of its Currie Cup partnership. Earlier in the season it also released a series of Currie Cup video clips featuring interviews with some Western Province players and behind-the-scenes glimpses of some unusual and remarkable trick shots.

Marlies Kappers, head of marketing, explains: “This is the second year of our Currie Cup partnership and we wanted to do something more than just branding at matches. We thought the FANCAM image would be a great way for people to re-live the excitement of being at the game as well as sharing the atmosphere with their friends and family.”

FANCAM CEO, Tinus le Roux, says after its success internationally, it’s wonderful to be bringing the technology home.

“We’ve taken FANCAM to some of the biggest sporting events in the world and it all started at Newlands, so it’s very special to be back.”

In addition to this weekend’s Currie Cup match at Newlands, the FANCAM will be at the following games:

–        9 September – DHL Western Province vs Toyota Free State

–        16 September – Xerox Golden Lions vs Vodacom Blue Bulls

–        23 September – DHL Western Province vs Tafel Lager Griquas

–        8 October – DHL Western Province vs Xerox Lions

–        28 October – finals
