Actress and presenter, Nicole Bessick (22), has once again proven how she is taking the SA entertainment industry by storm by being cast in the hit e-tv show, Broken Vows, that launched during April this year.
Originally from Cape Town, Bessick recently relocated to Johannesburg for her role on Broken Vows, playing the character Chloe Hendricks.
“Working on the show has been an absolute blast,” says Bessick. “I’m having so much fun playing Chloe! Portraying the character everybody loves to hate is always a bit touch-and-go, but the buzz it has created on social media has been amazing.”
She adds: ”A big part of me is still in that ‘is this really happening’ phase. It’s an unbelievable experience sharing screen time with some of SA’s best. I mean, I grew up watching these guys in action… Shaleen Surtie-Richards, Thembi Mtshali and of course Emmanuel Castis who plays my ‘dad’ on the show, to name a few. It’s so surreal… but look forward to taking each day as it comes.”
Also an anti-bullying spokesperson, this talented star is known as a celebrity boxing champion and presenter on The A1 TV.
The young actress got her big break in the locally produced and internationally acclaimed crime thriller, Cold Harbour, screened at Cannes, Berlin and the Los Angeles film festivals. She has also been seen in the Netflix hit, Black Mirror and Investigation Discovery’s Killer Instinct. On local screens she is known for her work on Which Way on SABC3 and She’s The One on e-tv.
Bessick comments about her character on Broken Vows: “Chloe is a stunning and athletic young woman. She lost her father at an early age and as she was responsible for his death, it leaves her with ‘daddy issues’ as she has never forgiven herself. She was also a bit of a rebel at school and often got into trouble with her cousin and best friend, the character Brandon (played by Danny Ross), with Chloe being the main instigator. Brandon’s mom intervened and made Chloe and her mom move away, but now she’s back and causing some mischief!”Part of the drama that her character Chloe is already causing on Broken Vows includes pretending to be the daughter of the character, Chris. This is all part of the character Brandon’s plan to punish his father for abandoning him as a child. “Initially it’s just a game to her, but as the relationship between her and Chris deepens, she starts thinking of him as the father she had lost and this jeopardises her relationship with Brandon. But Brandon can unmask her true identity. See? All this drama already and Chloe only now made her appearance on the show. It goes without saying, I’m having the best time playing her!” says Bessick.
Reflecting on her own childhood, the beauty says: “My toughest challenge in life has been overcoming bullying at school. My involvement with the #Bullyproof campaign stems from that.”
Personifying “beauty and brains”, Bessick is a UCT graduate and was also named as one of a handful of Future Shapers in South Africa by leading glossy magazine, Marie Claire, during August this year. By the looks of it, they were spot on!
Bessick concludes: “I want to play an active role in the future of my generation and live life as a positive role model. I want to challenge stereotypes and making a difference is where my head is at.”
