Life Below Zero
From Sunday 21 January at 17:00 on BBC Earth (DStv channel 184)
Series 5 (8 Episodes)
The struggle for survival continues for Sue Aikens, Jessie Holmes, Glenn Villaneuve and the Hailstone family as the onslaught of winter looms once again in Alaska in series five of this awe-inspiring series. With the last of the longer days coming to an end, the Alaskans must travel through unfamiliar territories and stockpile resources before the waterways freeze and winter’s dark, brutal conditions overtake the land. But as the nights draw in, the inhabitants have fewer daylight hours to build vital tools, hunt for food and sharpen their survival skills.
They work hard, but life is tough when you live off the grid, miles from the nearest road – and those who dwell on the frontier of the Arctic must do whatever is in their power to secure their homesteads for the cold, dark winter that lies ahead.
Where the Wild Men Are with Ben FogleFrom Sunday 21 January at 18:00 on BBC Earth (DStv channel 184)
Series 5 (8 Episodes)
Adventurer Ben Fogle meets more people who have turned their backs on the trappings of Western society and set up home in some of the most isolated locations on Earth.
This series sees Ben head to the remote Wilderness Island, off Australia’s north-western cape, to meet a couple whose near-death experiences compelled them to start a new life in the wild. While Jim’s parachuting accident convinced him to pursue his Robinson Crusoe dream, it was an horrific car accident that inspired Kim to change her life for the better. Ben gets a lesson in the art of mud-crabbing, and learns that the island’s inhabitants have an urgent need for fresh water.
Ben then heads to the azure seas and pine-covered mountains of Canada, where artistic couple Catherine and Wayne live on a floating island they built themselves – a home they share with seals, eagles, bears and chihuahuas!
Other remote locations Ben visits in this series include a farm on the edge of the Egyptian Sahara desert, a backpacker’s hostel deep in the Guatemalan jungle and the remote Andalucían mountains where a British couple have become alpaca farmers.
