Between Monday 5 and Thursday 8 March, 12 Peninsula High Schools will go head-to-head in the 2018 High School Band Slam at the V&A Waterfront’s Amphitheatre from 6pm.

The audience can expect to hear a wide range of music genres and instruments including drums, pianos, guitars and saxophones.

The shortlist of schools includes Bridge Town, Paral Vallei, Parklands College, Settlers High, Bishops, Elsies River, Wynberg Girls, Alexander Stinton, Rustenberg and Bergvliet

At stake is musical equipment from event partners, the V&A Waterfront and Mars Music worth R20 000. An additional R5 000 will be awarded to the school that demonstrates they have the best crowd participation.

Each school band will be scored by a panel of industry experts according to three categories.

Musicality includes song arrangements, technical proficiency, artistic ability, originality and interpretation. For presentation the judges will be look at performance attitude, stage dominance, confidence and rapport. For patronage, schools will need to show they have support, crowd participation, school spirit and enthusiasm.BAND SLAM: Bridge Town, Paral Vallei

Bridge Town High School

This band was established in 2014 as part of the principal Mr. Andrew Windvogel vision to not only develop students academically but artistically as well. Students are from previously disadvantaged townships such as Bridgetown, Khayalitsha, Mitchell’s Plain, and Gugulethu. What the band shares is an overwhelming passion to create music.

Parel Vallei High School

Formed in 2015, the Parel Vallei High school band has focused on performing popular hit songs. They will be performing as a 13-piece band showcasing hits such as “Cool Kids” and “Ugly Heart”. To add to their performance they will be adding Drumline and Dancers.

Parklands College

The Parklands College Jazz Band formed in 2014 as a 10-piece ensemble that boasts a versatile group of young and talented musicians. Playing a mixture of jazzy, groovy and uplifting pop music their sound is lively and fun. The bands’ stage performance is energetic, dynamic and highly entertaining.

Settlers High School

The band has a repertoire ranging from well-known jazz standards and African music, to local and international jazz, Latin and pop covers. They won the annual V&A Waterfront High School Band Slam Competition in 2014 and 2015. The Dynamix Jazz Band re-formed in 2017 with an entirely new cast of first-time musicians.

Bishops College

The Bishops Blues Band enjoys doing covers of hits from the 60s. The band comprises of drummer Hugo Janssen, guitarist Jono Greyling and Benjamin Fisher on vocals and keyboards.

Elsies River High School

The school has a rich cultural and academic history despite not having many resources. Some of the band’s accolades include being 2015 and 2016 High School Jam Champions, 2016 and 2017 Band Slam Champions and performing at the 2016 Cape Town International Jazz Festival. The school strives to offer students platforms such as the High School Band Slam where they can express themselves creatively.

Wynberg Girls High School

The Wynberg Girls Band has grown since forming in 2009, and now comprises of 25 girls under the leadership of Dayna Pearce. For the past three years the band has made it to the finals of the Band Slam and have received the spirit award and cash prize on numerous occasions. They regularly perform in public and their repertoire includes a wide range of genres from swing to pop.

Alexander Stinton High School

The Alexander Sinton High School band has been in existence for a few years and is currently under the direction of Ms. Van Der Schyff. In 2016, the existing band debuted in the Cape Town International Jazz Festival’s high school band’s Training and Development showcase. They have successful public performances under their belt.

Rustenburg Girls High School

The Rustenburg Girls’ High School Jazz Band was founded in 2001 by Rosemary Davis who developed it into a fully-fledged ensemble with a versatile Jazz Combo running alongside. Since her retirement in 2010, Robyn Jepson continued to develop the performing skills of the Band through exposure to public performances and masterclasses from prominent jazz musicians, expanding the saxophone section by adding the baritone Saxophone. They performed in the 2014 and 2015 Band Slam contests with their new Band director, Leslie Elderkin.

Bergvliet High School

The Bergvliet High School tentet was first established in 2011 when a group of students, with help and support of teacher Miss Veotte, performed for Good Hope FM radio. Since then they have performed at various venues and events around Cape Town. Members of the tentet share a passion for music.
