Kimberley-born Boipelo Mooketsi regards herself as a storyteller. The dynamic young presenter who joined 5FM this month is also a public speaker, MC and AFDA graduate. She started her radio career at campus radio before moving on to a regional radio station. She hopes to effortlessly work across all broadcast platforms, with a large focus on television. Boipelo has previously worked with award-winning production house Diprente Films as a writer and production intern and currently works as a production assistant on SABC 2’s Muvhango in addition to her work at the station. You can listen to Boipelo weekends on 5 Weekend Nights, 10:00 -01:00.

Tells us about your very first show at 5FM?

Boipelo: “Fifteen minutes before my show, the system decided to crash. As a newbie who was basically still training, my heart stopped for a second. But instinct quickly kicked in, I called our technical producer, who guided me through, and we sorted it out. I laughed about it after but as it was happening, I wanted to scream. Funnily enough, I look back and I appreciate the moment so much because the “worst” happened and I got out of it more knowledgeable. It kind of felt like a baptism. By the time it was time for my show, everything went well, and it was smooth sailing from there on. Overall, my experience at 5FM has been amazing. Everyone who I’ve met thus far has been welcoming, willing to lend a helping hand and offer free radio advice.”

If you could join any past or current music group, which would you want to join?

Boipelo: “It would definitely have to be Jamali, Destiny’s Child or Danity Kane. I actually have a slight obsession with girl groups, what an iconic era of music!”

If you had to describe yourself as an animal, which one would it be?

Boipelo: “Definitely a dolphin. Totes!!  I say that because they’re so intelligent and sociable and those are two of my strongest traits.

What unwritten rule would you make mandatory if you could?

Boipelo: “Pineapple does NOT belong on a pizza!

If you could completely get rid of one month out of the year, which month would it be and why?

Boipelo: “November! What an unnecessary month, it always feels so long. It’s genuinely just that month that’s in the way of December and nice times.

Members of the public are reminded, as part of the comment period on the City of Cape Town’s draft Budget (2021/22), that they have the opportunity to submit their comments on the proposed revised approach to domestic metering, which encourages residents to manage their own water usage and will see the roll-out of the latest conventional metering technology. The public participation period ends on 3 May 2021. Read more below:

The Water and Sanitation Department is proposing that, from July 2021, the City no longer installs new water management device meters (WMDs), and that WMDs currently in service be replaced by the conventional meters with the latest metering technology as they reach the end of their expected lifespan.

As a result, the City’s approach to managing water usage in indigent households will also change.

It is proposed that usage limits that have been programmed into WMDs throughout the city will be systematically removed from 1 July 2021.

In place of volume-restricted WMDs at registered indigent properties, the City is proposing an alternative water management approach, where customers take responsibility for using less than a maximum limit set by the City.

This approach forms part of proposed changes to the Tariff Policy as per the 2021/22 Tabled Budget.

Replies to my parliamentary questions reveal that 696 children have been kidnapped in the Western Cape over the last five years. This represents roughly 20% of all kidnapping victims in our province. The Democratic Alliance therefore welcomes the undertaking by the Western Cape Department of Community Safety to prioritise the monitoring of child kidnappings through the Court Watching Brief Programme.

Between 2015 and 2019, 696 children were kidnapped in our province. 3482 people were kidnapped during this time, which means that children represent 20% of all kidnap victims. The number of child kidnappings has remained relatively stable year on year, however we would want to see a decreasing trend instead. This is why I have been using oversight mechanisms to monitor the number of child kidnappings in our province over the last 5 years.

We will continue to monitor these crimes to ensure that efforts have impact, and that we can save as many children as possible from this awful fate.

The trauma and devastation that this particularly cruel crime causes, needs active attention from authorities. It is therefore encouraging that the Western Cape Departments of Community Safety, Social Development and the province’s Children’s Commissioner are teaming up to develop a tracking tool to ensure that these crimes are properly prosecuted by the criminal justice system.
